As a Japan noob, I spent months building my Tokyo itinerary, and I must say I’m quite proud! I’ve broken up my Tokyo Cheat Sheet into several posts, and I’m starting with my personal itinerary, including a useful Google map. Eight days simply wasn’t enough, but here’s what we managed to squeeze in:

Top tips before you start packing:

Bring comfortable shoes: You will have to walk everywhere. Sneakers! Always pick sneakers!

Don’t purchase a JR Pass, just get a Passmo: That’s their travel card. You add a fixed amount to the card and it allows you to travel across all Tokyo lines easily.

Pick an apartment with a lift: We got a walk up, and lugging suitcases around was hell. It’s tough enough dragging out 30kg suitcases up to the train’s platform.

Book a late afternoon flight home: It’ll take quite a long time to get to the airport, so unless you want to start your trip back to the airport at the crack of dawn, be smart and book the right time!
